Research Group of Prof. S.Graeser

Interests of the mineralogy group are focussed mainly on the study and systematics of minerals, preferably from the Swiss Alps. Special methods have been developped for the study of very small sample quantities. Besides for own research projects, determination work has been carried out as a service for physics, chemistry and medical departments and also for mineral collectors.

Areas of research:

A. Formation of Alpine fissure minerals

Cooperation with Carlo Gramaccioli and Francesco Demartin (University of Milano), H.A. Stalder (Natural History Museum Berne), Thomas Armbruster (University of Berne)

Current research projects:

Recent publications:
Schweiz. Mineralog. Petrogr. Mitt. 68, 125-132 (1988)
American Mineralog. 74, 676-684 (1989)
American Mineralog. 79, 996-1002 (1994)

B. Crystalchemistry and crystal structure of sulfosalts

Cooperation with Allan Pring (South Australian Museum, Adelaide, Australia), Alan Criddle (British Museum, London), Andreas Edenharter (University of Göttingen, now University of Basel), Reinhard Wulf (University of Göttingen, now Université Sorbonne, Paris)

Current research projects:

Recent Publications:

C. Systematic Mineralogy

As Swiss delegate (Stefan Graeser) in I.M.A. commissions: "Commission on new minerals and mineral names" and "Commission on classification of minerals" cooperation with the respective chairman (Joseph Mandarino, Toronto/Canada; Joel Grice Ottawa/Canada; Ernie Nickel, CSIRO, Wembley/Australia; José Lima de Faria, University of Lisboa/Portugal).

D. Other fields of activity:

"New photovoltaic materials from systematic mineralogy" - Research project: EC JOULE II Project

Cooperation with Herbert Dittrich (Zentrum f. Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung, Stuttgart/Germany), Daniel Lincot (Ecole Supérieure de Chimie de Paris, CNRS/France), David J. Vaughan, University of Manchester/Great Britain), Martha Lux-Steiner, University of Konstanz/Germany), Rien Kunst, Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin/Germany).

Since 1993, the Mineralogic - Petrographic Institute Basel (S. Graeser) is partner in this EC research project. A prolongation for the project (3 years) is under consideration in Bruxelles at the moment.

Recent publications:
